Blog Housekeeping and House Hunters

Hi Everyone. Sorry for the delay. I've been doing some YIFY soul-searching this week. Lots of trust falls and ropes courses with me and my blog.

So I'll start with a little blog housekeeping. This food blog week in review thing seemed to work pretty well, so I should probably do some more of that. That being said, the food blog critic thing really doesn't fit into the strict charter of this blog - nor is it entirely interesting to people who don't spend their free time blogstalking (except reading mine). So the master plan now is to create a new blog where I just talk about other blogs. I'll start working on that one of these days with a new domain, new design, and all of the other things that go along with starting a new blog. Once that happens, YIFY will go back to just being a random collection of my thoughts about nothing in particular. Oh, and the new food blogstalker blog (yet to be named or created) will have pictures and graphics and all of the things that a blog should have. YIFY will remain in its current (ugly) format. So for the next couple of weeks, I'll continue doing the food blog posting thing here until I get motivated and make the pretty blog.

Okay, that's enough housekeeping for one day. Now I'll make the smooth transition from blog details to cable television...

As many of you know, I spend a significant amount of my life watching television. I can't spend all of my free time stalking food blogs, and television is more than happy to fill this need. There are really three categories of television shows that Kate and I watch:

1. Shows that only Kate likes (about 15 shows - mostly those on HGTV or TLC)
2. Shows that only I like (about 100 shows - pretty much everything)
3. Shows that we both like (4 shows that I can think of)

I can think of about four shows that we both like off the top of my head: The Office, The Biggest Loser, Barefoot Contessa, and The Today Show. Of course, The Today Show should count as more than one show, since it's literally on for 24 hours per week (two hours on Saturdays and Sundays, and 4 hours each weekday). That's ridiculous, but that's for another post. This one is about House Hunters. It used to be one of the shows that we both like, but I recently made the decision to move it into the 'Shows that only Kate likes' bucket.

I'm not entirely sure why I broke up with House Hunters, but I can think of a couple possible reasons - I could be burned out from doing actual house hunting not very long ago and the thought of house hunting again just is not appealing at all. Or (more likely) I've finally realized that every single episode of House Hunters is exactly the same. Since it's still in the "shows that Kate likes" category, I still have to sit through my share of episodes. So I've decided to come up with a list of things that will likely happen in an episode, and then rate the episode based on how many of these things actually happens. Every episode has at least 2 of these things happen, if you're lucky, you'll see an episode with four or more of the following:

1. [Wife/Girlfriend] - Steps into walk in closet and makes some stupid joke about "Well, this is big enough for my wardrobe, but I don't know where he'll put his clothes" ha ha ha

2. [Husband/Boyfriend] - Sees dishwasher and makes dumb joke about "not having dishpan hands anymore" ha ha ha

3. [Wife/Girlfriend] - shows some apprehension about the backyard. Usually something about "I don't know if a pool is really safe with the kids" or "what if a bear comes in from that wooded area and eats the kids." Okay, that second one never happens, but the first one is pretty common.

4. [Husband/Boyfriend] - expresses some interest in turning the basement, shed, or bonus room into a 'men's den'. Bonus point if he uses the term 'man cave' and acts like he's the first person to ever use the term.

5. [Wife/Girlfriend] - dismisses one of the houses because of something stupid like "I just don't know about the paint color in the baby's room." This is usually when Kate starts talking to them through the TV and says something about how easy it would be to change the color of the baby's room.

6. [Realtor] Ends up showing houses that are not in the couple's price range. Bonus point if they end up buying a home that was not in their original price range.

So next time you watch House Hunters, see how many of these you can check off your list. Or, next time you lose control of the remote try to come up with a your own episode cliche scavenger hunt. It helps pass the time.

  1. i've been following your blog lately and its actually one of the few that isnt a food blog that i read and enjoy doing so, which makes it more fun. all the things you write about are funny and really makes you stop and think 'oh my gosh, he's right'.

i totally agree with you on the house hunters analysis. realtors are pretty sneaky to show you a house out of your price range, and i cant stand it when wives say that closet thing, but even worse is when men say it to their wives, like seriously what self-respecting man has more clothes than his girlfriend/wife?! lol.

  2. current househuntersApril 2, 2009 at 4:55 AM

Although 'househunters' is still on our list of shows we both like, there are a couple of other things about the show that we could do without (besides the ones you so aptly mentioned). How about the husband sitting fully clothed in the tub - I guess fully clothed is better than the alternative. The other rather odd detail about the show is that it never addresses the subject of the current housing crisis. I guess there is enough of that information on the evening news and they do want to put a happy spin on buying / selling a home. On the positive side, many of the other programs on HGTV - such as 'Property Virgins' - have even more irritating oddities. I guess that's fodder for future blogs. Keep up the good work.

    ReplyDelete
  3. YES. But not just House Hunters -- the same thing happens on Property Virgins... and pretty much every show on buying houses.

    ReplyDelete
  4. I can't believe I left off the 'husband in bathtub fully clothed.' That is a classic HH Move. And yes, Property Virgins, My First Place, and all of the other home buying shows follow the same formula, just with less Suzanne Whang.

  5. Great discussion on House Hunters. I find the show irritating ans stopped watching some time ago becuase it seemed like they were filmed in the 90s and the people tried to act so natural with comments, it was just to annoying.

Anyways, hope that when you do your food blog review this week you will mention how several of the bloggers idea of an April Fool's joke was eating OMG something that contained FAT! or bacon grease...I found it funny and almost annoying too...uh oh will have to stop "watching" those too?!

    ReplyDelete
  6. Anon - I will absolutely be discussing the outbreak of April Fool's day posts on the food blog roundup. In most cases, the 'prank' food actually sounded like something I would eat, which I how I knew it was a 'joke'.

  7. First let me state that I absolutely love House Hunters. It is hands down the best show on television but the only reason is THE HOUSES. I am obsessed with houses like you, Nate, are obsessed with food blogs ;)

But I totally find things about HH very annoying and you hit them all on the head. I also hate it when they say, after insisting they MUST have 4 bedrooms and the realtor shows them a 2 bedroom house or they say they hate carpet and see a house with only carpet, "We could make it work."

I also hate it when they say "good closet space" or pretty much any comment about the closets.

    I hate all jokes.

But most of all, I hate it when they choose the wrong house. Being a HH expert, I ALWAYS choose the right house and it really bothers me when they go with the crappy, more expensive one or the one with zero character when they said they wanted character. Just today I watched an episode in Denver with a woman with dogs who pretty much hated everything about a house and had two other great options and what do you know, she picked the more expensive crappy one!!

    That said, I love houses!!!!

I have about 35 episodes DVRed right now. Want to come over?

PS. I hope you did not want to eat onion oatmeal!

    ReplyDelete
  8. KERF - Kate would like to come over and watch your DVR'd episodes. May I recommend a time when there is something on my TV that I want to watch?

I agree with you on the Realtor not listening to the clients, although I'm reminded of a Mitch Hedberg joke about Realtors. Something about he's the one who decides how many bedrooms a house has in it. "this bedroom has an oven in it, and this bedroom has a toilet and shower."

No, I didn't want your Onion Oats - my comment was primarily directed towards HTP and her BK breakfast, which looked pretty good to me.

  9. what are your favorite tv shows YIFY?

    ReplyDelete
  10. Oh B+B (KLM) I have so many. You now know that Spongebob is on the list. Just kidding. Here we go...

The Daily Show, The Office, 30 Rock, House, Barefoot Contessa, Oprah, Ellen, Today Show, The Real World, Lie to Me, Bones, Mad Men, Real Housewives of (Insert city name), The Colbert Report, The Rachel Maddow Show, CBS Sunday Morning, 60 Minutes, Scrubs, Jeopardy, All Law and Order Shows, The Biggest Loser and many, many more.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Yeah, House Hunters is really annoying. Maybe you and I can make a solid drinking game out of all the stupid things couples do in the show.

If I want to annoy myself, I try to watch the show from the cameraman's perspective. Like when the camera goes into a room, then they shut the door, then the couple enters and the camera records their reaction as if it's the first time anyone's ever been in the room.

Also I hate when they have little staged moments about why their current house sucks. "WIFE: Can you move your bike, I need to get to the washer! HUSBAND: Where would I move it, we don't have any space!" Murder.

And the classic staged moment: the phone call from the realtor with the news.

Oh, and I'd just like to point out that the things Kath hates about the show are the things that make her guess incorrectly!

    It's sooooo #3.

    ReplyDelete
  12. It's so true. You almost forgot the wife locking the husband in the closet exclaiming "Here's your new room honey". I saw one episode of "My First Place" where a single girl was looking for a house with 5 bedrooms, clearly so she can sleep in a new one every night. So strange those shows....yet I watch

    ReplyDelete
  13. I used to watch it but I too have been falling out of love lately. It's pretty much a 'I'll watch if there's nothing else on' show now.

Although, I have to say, as someone who works in television, it's a genius concept. You don't require any real camera work, no talent and the editing is simply a series of dissolves. And yet they manage to get it to air five times a day.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Nate - great post - - Fellow HH sufferer here...I'm so glad that Matt pointed out the staged moments used to highlight why the couple needs a new house...my favorite moments usually come when the couple have to share a bathroom sink...or when they both happen to be cooking very unique but very complex (seperate) meals that each require all four of the burners in their 'tiny' kitchen...better than the actual set up is the makeshift acting that goes into these scenes...priceless...love the random, yet oh so relevent blog topics...keep them coming...

    ReplyDelete
  15. I love Barefoot contessa too and I dvr the saturday episodes except when (gasp!) someone else comes on for reasons unknown. sadly just the other day i was watching it and my bf came in to change it and there were only 7 minutes left! needless to say i kept it and still need to watch those last precious minutes. "how good does that look?" also, i broke up with a show recently - Heroes. if you two are still together i suggest ending it. its like an abusive relationship - awful episode, promise of something better next time, repeat. love the blog!

    ReplyDelete
  16. Spoiler alert - don't read this is you don't want this show ruined for you!
I used to love House Hunters until I found out that it is almost always staged - they actually advertise for people who have already bought a house but have not closed on it yet, and they tour that house and two others as if there is any actual choice! The article I read was about a couple who answered an ad to be on the show, and it was filmed just when they took possession but had not moved in. The ironic thing was, of the two houses that were dug up for them to pretend to consider, they actually far preferred one of them and wished they could buy it but they were already committed to the one they were buying. Once read that it all made sense - so often it seems the people pick a house that does not seem the best fit for them according to their wish list. Also, have you noticed how often at least one of the houses is empty of furniture - and that turns out to be their choice more often than not? That is because the previous owners have moved since the people on the show are about to move in!! In some cases, the houses they tour are not even on the market - in one episode that was mentioned, they used a friends house as one of the supposed possibilities! Apparently not every episode is this staged - on some the people truly are house hunting still - but just the knowledge that any of the episodes are after that fact ruins this show for me!

    ReplyDelete
  17. I already had read the spoiler some place else and it did manage to ruin my love for the show. I still watch it mostly for the houses/locations (love HH Intl).

However by knowing the mechanics now its so easy for me to know which house they're gonna pick, just by watching their faces and usually they praise their pick and talk louder and with a higher pitch voice.

It was very clear during the Amalfi coast episode. The people chose a ruin and form the get go they only had high remarks about it.

  31. She raced down them, not slowing when she reached ways that were unfamiliar to her. His throat worked to swallow, and a fine sheen of sweat shimmered on his skin. She couldnt stop staring. Nialdlye shook her head. They deserved to find comfort. Now she understood and finally saw the nightmare shed been as a student. With a pang, Eyrhaen pictured Tykir. Just remember what She told you. Nialdlye wore a simple green shift that barely reached her thighs. Hes loved you this entire time. Her fingers curled into fists, and she pounded both of them on his chest. His hand trailed up her bare arm, causing gooseflesh. It put his nose right above hers, his bright eyes boring down into her skull. She growled, frustration buzzing beneath her skin. She closed her eyes and groaned, luxuriating under his weight. It felt like he was pushing at the base of her heart. Theres no reason I should flourish. The three of them were much more comfortable on their own. Her hands grasped his immediately. Its so much more convenient.

We may have even convinced ourselves that we dont feel what we feel for them. Below her, even more people filed in through the open archway across from her balcony. She waited until her breathing felt right again.

This is a clear example of a harmless meaningless post, so why delete it, mr Moderator?
How do I make my blog appear in search engines? I had it for a year, and no one comes to visit.
I'm not sure I agree with you on some key points. Do you allow guest blog posts? I'd love to write on this topic.

Never underestimate the power of human stupidity.

  68. One thing that makes the HP Officejet 6000 so great is that it is one of the fastest printers that I have ever used that isn't in the one or two thousand dollar range. I don't have to wait a very long time at all when I have to print ten or more pages at a time and it reacts pretty much as soon as I hit the Print button. That is what I wanted when I bought it, and that is what I got.
